The Masterwork Chorus has performed Handel's Messiah, the signature work of its repertoire, in some of New York City's greatest venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Avery Fisher Hall. In a tribute to Masterwork’s rendition of Handel's magnificent oratorio at Carnegie Hall, the New York Times raved, "Just about the last word... a trim, focused sound!"
Handel composed Messiah in 1741, but the great work has, since 1750, been performed every year on stages all over the world. Masterwork’s unique presentation combines the precision that impressed the Times critic with an extraordinary level of deeply-felt passion for this oratorio’s timeless message. Please see an insightful interview with Maestro Megill by Mike Tschappat of the Daily Record for a preview of Masterwork's Fall 2007 concert set:
"Most people know the music, can probably even hum a few bars. They've heard it in movies and commercials.
Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana," written 70 years ago, has never gone out of style. Its songs, based on the secular writings of medieval students and clergy, will be performed Nov. 3 by the Masterwork Chorus at Drew University's Dorothy Young Center for the Arts in Madison.
"It's such an accessible piece," said Andrew Megill, music director of the chorus, "because of its incredibly strong rhythms. It connects to everybody's love of dance." Read more...
"Masterwork Chorus an impressive group of talented singers. I was struck by the intensity each member brought to their singing. Masterwork moves from strength to strength and now stands as a chorus of soloists forming a formidable whole . Megill's belief in this music and the chorus' sensitivity to the text (and their excellent diction) evidenced much sweat and rehearsal.....This tribute is to both Dr. Megill and Masterwork Chorus for their current performance level ."
